Mark thanks for that article about expansion tanks, Very informative. I have one question that i did not see in your article concerning the placement and orientation of a bladder type expansion tank on a hot water system-- can the tank be horizontal? I'm a HO and in my system it is connected like this- small nipple under spirovent, threaded shutoff valve, small nipple, threaded elbow, expanion tank. The tank is horizontal. The schrader valve is on the other end of the tank opposite the threaded conection of the tank. Does the tank work when piped in this manner? Thank You Jim.

Yes but...
and there's ALWAYS a butt in every crowd eh...
When mounted either upside down or horizontal, some of the water space is consumed by air bubbles. It would probably effect the acceptance capacity of the tank, but is probably no big deal. Still there really is no right way to do things wrong...
If you can use a longer nipple, and a 90 degree el, you can mount the tank in the postion it was intended to be mounted, with its tank nipple in the vertical, up facing direction.
Glad to have been able to help you with your problem.
