in a 9 section Weil 78 series (steam). The bad section is sect#8. Looks as though its been replaced before. Owner said a sect was replaced but he doesnt know which one. Piping is a disaster as is the rest of the install. Since its below zero here with the wind chill does anyone see a problem with shortening the block for the time being provided the burner is refired to accomodate? New sect is a week away and this cannot wait. Gaskets and hardware are available now. Anything to look out for??? Comments please. Thanks in advance. B.T.W I am looking only and NOT participating in the repair (although I wish I could). Another month to six weeks for me (with a little luck). Tommy

Should work.
A fist size hole indicates a problem other than a section defect. Might want to go even lower on the input until the piping is corrected. If the safeties are mounted on the Weil recommended mud collector, check them.
Good luck.

short Weil
As long as the smaller boiler will produce enough steam, why not? It's been done before, and aren't you glad for those elastomer seals????
