I would recommend buying Dan's books "We got Steam Heat" and "The Lost Art of Steam Heating". I did and restored my old steam system to it's original efficiency. Consequently my gas bills are about 60% lower this year than last year even with the increase in gas costs. I'll bet you are missing a few things like proper steam main and radiator venting, steam main insulation and too high boiler pressure settings. All of which make a steam system efficient and are covered throughly in the books.

    Steam vs. FHA for Gas.

I have just purchased a house with an old steam boiler. I have 11 radiators of various sizes. All brand new windows, attic tight. With the thermostat set at 59 from Nov 11 until Dec 8 with no one living in the house the gas bill said I used 365 therms. I have a two family with more total rooms which is gas FHA and the total of the two units for the same period was 150 therms. Is steam a more costly system which generates a higher usage of therms ?
