so anxious, so much to learn
I have been doing hvac for almost a year now and I have really learned alot about this trade within that time period, but I still don't feel like i'm where I need to be knowledge wise and skill wise either. I know that I'm just starting out learning the ropes, but I know that there is a better way for me to attain more than what i know now. I work with a small company compared to the area in work in (montgomery county md) and I haven't been feeling like I've been learning enough but I have been learning somethings. I would like to know if anybody had any suggestions on how I could attain more skill and knowledge on my own with the bosses help so that I can become a better tech and not rely on the boss man to make every move on the job site. Basically I want to be independant at work and while striving for profection at the same time. Can anybody tell me how can I make myself a better technician so that I can proform to my full capabilities.

You've got to read EVERYTHING you can get
your hands on...you'd be surprised what the local library has. Get a sibscrip. to P & M magazine, hang out here, explore the WHOLE SITE. Get ALL Of Dan';s books AND the others he recommends, take all the o.t. your boss throws out ya...you'll get your shot dude, prepare for that day! Mad Dog

I'll second that post!!!!!!
I started out with next to no technical training, in commercial refrigeration, and had to learn everything the hard way.
When I found the internet close to 15 years later, I was in shock at how little I really knew. I've spent the past 4 years not sleeping...:}
Like Mad Dog says, read EVERY SINGLE WORD written by Dan Holahan.
If you're in need of warm air/ac/heatpump/refrigeration advice, there are people on the net that can help you out.
If you're looking for good, texts on HVACR, the "Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Technology " book by Whitman, Johnson, $ Tomcyzk is a good basic text, that touches a little bit on everything.
Also, check out HVACTV.com. Lots of good training videos on that site geared towards newer techs.
What kind of HVAC work are you trying to learn? Hydronics, warmair, ac???0 -
Great job.
My first one, uh, well, I don't really want to talk about it.............:{0 -

Holy Cow, I didn't think anybody would wear a T-shirt in Alaska. Must be a tough guy, along with a good boilerman.0 -
