Dropped Header??

It also allows for varying expansion rates between the cast iron of the boiler and the steel of the piping. The elbows become "swivel" joints.

    Dropped header?

I have read several posts referring to a dropped header on a steam boiler. I saw a post that showed a diagram from Burnham on what it should look like. My question is, other than space constraints why would you need or want a droped header? Is it all about space?
    Thanks

    Drier Steam

the extra flip allows for the steam to become drier before it heads out to do its job

    Anthony..

It is a very active topic among mechanics here on the "WALL"

Click on the search feature above and type in drop header you'll find some interesting discussion.

    It's also

much easier to put together if your boiler requires two or more risers from the boiler to the header. This is because of the two added swing joints. We drop all our headers now, as almost all the boilers we install need two risers to the header.

Here's a shot of a Columbia gas steamer we did recently.

they were new to me untill just recently

but after doing a replacement on a 800'000 btu steamer with a header that was too low and doing a drop header I am convinced it produces dryer steam and is certainly easier to pipe. I know from watching the water glass we are pulling water up into the risers, but after correcting the drip and with the drop headers, that system is just purring.

You are now a memeber of the...............................

Drop-header club. Jeff. An inspector here on Long Island failed a job of Ron Jr's because he was probably not accustomed to seeing one. They rule! Mad Dog

ya I read about Ron Jr's problem

hadn't realized there was so much published info on drop headers and going back to the 30's I thought someone said there was boiler info on drop header going back to then. Here if Ron finally got it ok'd?
