Where to buy 45/64 bit for 1/2-inch NPT Thread Tap

I just bought a tap at the local plumbing supply house and am amazed to find that almost no one sells the 45/64-inch bit that it requires. Even online! Am I missing something?

What size bits do you guys use when you need to tap a 1/2-inch hole?

also if there is a good industrial supply house, or a real hardware store around, they will have one.

45/64 is definitely out there in many varieties. HSS and exotics in normal drill bits of full-size and reduced shank, router bits and even high-precision masonary bits for drilling bowling balls!

Vermont American makes the regular drill bits, but doubt that they're considered "common" stock in most places.

    drill bit

must have your numbers wrong. 45/64 is almost 3/4" Can't run a 1/2 tap through a 3/4" hole. Maybe 25/64 or close to that? Anyway Grainger will have them.

    Drill bit

45/64 (.7031) IS the correct tap drill size for a 1/2-14 NPT hole. We use an 18 mm drill (.708). It works fine (we make hundreds of 1/2" NPT holes in steel pipe every day)
