Have a Client....
....who is quite tall, and has bad knees. His shower stall is a 48" one-piece with a pivot door. The distance from the floor to the top rail of the door assembly is 71".
He is asking me to quote him a replacement shower, and wants a door that he won't bang his head on. He doesn't like the existing stall, as it has a seat in it. Wants just a rectangular area to stand in!
I'm going to quote removing the existing stall, and tiling the opening all the way to the ceiling. My problem seems to be in finding a door. All the "stock" doors at the wholesaler have a top frame (once you get past 36" wide - this opening will be at least 45-46"), and he'll need to duck underneath it.
I have seen "frameless" doors before, but have no idea where to find them. Tried a Google search, but only found a couple of places that seem to make these, and they're all far away (shipping damage?).
Can anyone recommend a company, preferably near Ohio, that could help me out?
Thanks,

Try Basco, I have a link but wasn't able to copy a picture. Personally I don't get involved with Shower doors. Had a bad situation that cost me a lot of money. Now I let the G.C. deal with it or try to get the HO to hire a company that specializes.

Try "stock" steam shower doors--they're always full height and might be available in folding fashion. Try a Google for "'steam shower' door folding" or similar.0 -

I'm in.....
....Marblehead, Ohio. Right on Lake Erie, 1/2 way between Toledo and Cleveland.

Bill.......
...thanks, man. I tried Basco's site, and didn't really see anything that would work in my application. The opening width is what is hurting me.

Thanks, Mike.......
....the 71" height is not going to work. I need something either REALLY tall (for a REALLY tall man), or else something without a top rail. Doesn't seem to be a problem for openings up to about 36", but my application will be at least 44", and probably closer to 46", depending on the tile thickness.

Will do a bit more searching. How high do you need? Don't forget that you get to add the height of the door curb to the total height. Steam shower door I have (36" wide) is 76" tall but will have to dig for the manufacturer. It wasn't terribly expensive.
Is the door with "sidelites" option viable?0 -
The specific height.....
....hmmmm, I guess there's some flexibility there. The home owner stands a good 6'5", and it would be nice for him to be able to walk into the shower without having to duck underneath anything. A door with sidelites would certainly be acceptable, also. Keep in mind that I don't have an exact opening dimension yet, until I can meet with the tile guy at the job.
I appreciate all your help, Mike.

Maybe This?
"Semi-custom Framed Shower Door"
Check out model STM-301. You specify dimensions up to 60" W, 80" H. $800 in chrome, $1000 in brass. Clear or semi-obscure glass.
Not sure of budget. The custom frameless models are WAY up there though...0 -
That might just be.....
....the ticket!!
I will call them for more specifics.
Thanks again, Mike. You're a good man!!!!!!

You're quite welcome. Glad to help and hope it works out.0 -
panel and swing
Starch,
What I have seen on openings beyond 36" is that there is a fixed glass panel and a swinging door. These are readily available in frameless. The pivot can come from the end or the middle, depending on the room location.

Jerry,
I thought they were readily available, also. My supplier tells me differently, although I don't honestly know if he really looked into it or not!!!

How adamant is the customer about a door?
What about a good, old-fashioned curtain? The price is right. I could install a bidet, but good'ol TP's been working for years.0 -
any good glass co will be happy to provide and install for you
they may be kinda pricey, but so am I.
why? because we do it right.0 -
door
there is a place in columbus ohio I drove past last week near 70 and grandview ave IF you need more info let me know via e mail0 -
these are not \"supplier\" items
Starch,
With frameless doors, they have to be cut and drilled to better than 1/8th of an inch to work perfectly. It cost money, but it much better to have someone measure, cut and install the door for you. If they mess up, it's their work. Just put shower door into your favorite online yellow pages to get a list of people who do this. Also, if you work with GCs, they know the ones they like to deal with...

Hi,Starch...
Try Century Shower Door. They make a superb, but upscale, product. Most of the best wholesalers who have showrooms around here offer them. Good luck!0
