When sizing an end of main vent (or determining how many vents you need) for a 1-pipe steam system, how fast are you aiming to get the air out of the pipes?

As fast
as the steam can push it.

easy,
if the end of main vent tapping is for example, 1/2'' you remove any air vent and time how long it takes steam to appear at the open pipe from the time the header first got hot..this is now the time goal..add as many vents as needed to achieve this time..gwgillplumbingandheating.com

About a minute
measured from the time the boiler starts sending steam into the pipes. Measure the length and diameter of each steam main and we can tell you what you need. If there's old insulation on the pipes, measure its outside diameter without disturbing it and subtract 2-1/4 inches to get the pipe size.
