changing a filter in an oil furnace

We are out of oil once again, and it's no fun up here in Maine. The last time we needed a start, the furnace almost didn't stay on. We haven't changed the filter in 2 years, and have run out of oil many times! They charge $80 to come change the filter, which is money I just don't have after putting oil in the tank. Some guys at work said that it is very easy to do it yourself and it will be much more efficient. I hate to pay people to do something I can do, but I also am scared of staying another night w/o heat! Is it as easy as they say, can anyone tell me how to do it?
Thanks.

Weezbo, how does a tigger loop help keep oil in the tank???? Isn't that the real issue here!!!!!!!

do u prime the pump yourself? If the oil company does it for you then having them replace the filter shouldnt be a big deal. Keeping an eye on the gauge is the best way. I would say that 90% of our bad checks come from primes. Its getting to the point we are going to demand cash for primes

Salute to the breath of life.... Chandra

the tiger loop is able to conquer the priming process my its evil machinations,...filling the tank , that is something done by a fuel oil companys delivery schedule ...if you have a small tank then topping off the tank is difficult for them to do with out a track record with them, quite often one gets a price break on purchases of oil at 300,500,1000 and 10,000 gallons..so these tanks being larger only need to have the truck and driver and dispatchers attention once.some companies charge a premium for deliveries under 100 gallons...and the rest defer ... the advantage in larger deliveries is being able to take advantage of price changes and budgets these are some of the considerations that guide one in thier purchase of equipment for thier homes and business. these are commonly over looked manifestaions of cost when purchasing equipment....

    oil

The worst that you can do for oil fired equipment is run out of fuel. Heating equipment needs to be serviced and it needs to be serviced by someone who knows what he/she is doing. From your post you seem to think that having your equipment serviced is a waste of money. Perhaps a few cold Maine nights is whats needed to help you understand. Best Wishes J.Lockard
