It would be a bit taller and fatter, but would have the venting capacity of 4 Gorton #2s. How about it Ken? Mad Dog

the makers already do, sort of..

a hundred years ago it was called a thermostatically operated valve......today its called.....a....radiator trap...which limits its application by definition...but in my old old old drawings they were thermostatically operated valves and used as vents...venting out doors,,venting into the chimney...thats why i've been testing venting rates of radiator traps..to use as vents...by the way, barnes and jones vents the fastest of the modern traps, opps, thermostatic valves.. ;-)

    Vent Tapping Size

    Gerry-
Since you have been testing venting capacity, at what point does the tapping size make a difference? For example, I am suprised that the Gorton #2 has only a 1/2 inch tapping while the #1 has 3/4 inch - why would they downsize that on their larger vent? Also, I have on my long main a "christmas tree" of tees and street elbows to accommodate two #1's and one #2, but they all lead off of the same 3/4 nipple on the dry return.

At what point is it pointless to add additional venting off of the same nipple? It would seem at some point the nipple itself, and the amount of air that can pass through it, would be the limiting factor notwithstanding the enormous venting capacity attached to it.

So, along those lines, if Gorton were to make a #3 as requested (with 4 times the capacity of the #2) wouldn't it also need a 1 inch tapping (or larger) to be effective?

    you've got it right.

the tapping is for convenience best as i can determine..i put a valve at the end of my vent manifolds and with the boiler steaming away, if i open the valve and it influences the gauge then i add a vent..but the point gets reached where you open the valve and it doesn't influence the boilers gage any..your done now..adding more vents wont help..your correct that at that point you would need a bigger tap off the main to achieve any added venting..my most recent test was on a marsh company #55..i can flatulate better than this thing vents..hundred dollar paperweight..but you are correct in all your points..
