    Flame head carbon

For the second time this season, one Beckett AFG firing a V74T Burnham (steam) at 0.85 gph has carboned up the F3 retention head slots. Had 0.04 in. overfire draft, 400 degree net stack, 12% CO2, and less than #1 smoke when cleaned a month ago. This time changed the nozzle from a B to an A, which tests the same but looks hotter and sounds a bit more stable.

Anyone run across this before? Don't you just hate hurrying to those -14F, 3 a.m. house calls?

    pressure

You might have hit it. Checked pump pressure and found it at 85 psi. Raised it to 100, and will monitor. If that doesn't do it, I'll try a 70 degree hollow. Changing to the 0.85 hollow (A) nozzle from a B really quieted the flame noise.

    Fred,

    What burner is it?

Is it a Beckett AFG or a Riello F3?

sounds like a beckett afg with an f-3 head. the Z-dimension might be too far back, that will coke up the head. id pull the burner and reset the z. paul sr.

    Z

Thanks, Paul. I did pull the burner and check the Z dimension simply because it looked like direct spray impingment on the flame holder. The distance was on the money according to the burner papers. The static disk is the right one as well, and because it has the small fan (IAS), I even checked to make sure the low-fire baffle wasn't installed. I'm still hoping that the switch to the A nozzle, which looks hotter and is quieter, did the trick. I'll know in a day or so.

    Burner

Thanks, Ron. As mentioned above, its a Beckett AFG with F3 head and appropriate static plate. Is the other burner similar?

Also, has anyone here heard anything about a new design F3 head (dimples plus slots) that run quieter than the standard?
