Infrared Thermostat

You'll have to check the European catalogues from Siemens for any commercial units. There is a Japanese unit (see www.yamatake.com ) but as far as North America goes, good luck. You could "MacGyver" one up from an electronic temperature probe inside a black metal globe, but it wouldn't be very aesthetically pleasing. If your slab system is equipped with a circuit/zone circulating pump and a mixing valve , then try doing the constant circulation/variable temperature approach using a wall thermostat to control the mixing valve for that zone. Using a Tekmar PWM type thermostat would help with the response time issues.

Does anyone make an infrared thermostat. I have a radiant slab with no real provision for a temp sensor. It would seem that a wall mounted thermostat with the sensor from an infrared thermometer would be the ideal solution when a person wants to control slab temperature.0 -
Thanks Geoff
I was afraid that finding something dosmestically would be a problem. Comfort nor asthetics are much of a concern. This is a "poop" melt system. My crew went to lay the pipe and forgot to put in the tube for the thermostat bulb. Our goal with this system is minimum energy input while keeping the slab above freezing. I may be able to find a spot where I can hammerdrill a pocket for a sensor. I just thought that an infrared based thermostat would be the ideal solution here. When you mention the Tekmar PWM thermostats your are talking about the 500 series correct?0 -
Tekmar 500 series
Yes, the Tekmar 500 series thermostats are the ones I was thinking of. Depends on how you set up the averaging sensor. I think doing it right by drilling in and epoxying in a slab sensor is the "sure thing" and at the end of the day will be the right thing to do.0
