and what pipe size is it?
If the main has old insulation, don't disturb it. Measure its outside diameter, subtract 2-1/4 inches and that's likely your pipe size.
If you have more than one steam main, measure them all and tell us what vent is on each one.
With this info we can tell you what you need.

Which Steam Valve to use?
Hi, i have a one pipe steam system. I know pretty little compared to you gurus out here on these forums but I had a simple question.
My house is a 2 floor house + basement with 2 large size heaters on the first floor (living room and dining) and 3 smaller heaters on the second floor (bedrooms). On the supply main pipe in the basement which seems to circulate back to the basement there is an Air Vent. Some genius used it as a hanger support and broke it. I need to put a new one in there but I dont know what size.
The only thing written on the original valve is this:
NORCA AVS 250
To remove it, i used a 14mm wrench so its not a very small valve. I have no idea what to replace it with. I asked some stores but theyre puzzled. Can someone please reply to my email as well as this post.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Good luck to you all,

Hi, i measured the length of the pipe that circulates in the basement back to the boiler... i believe its called the main supply pipe
"one way" the pipe is about 553 inches. This is just one way... since it circulates back to the boiler the full length is 1106 inches.
i measured the pipe that the steam leaves the boiler and its about 3 1/4 inches in diameter. the pipe diameter where the valve is supposed to be is between 2 and 2 1/4 inches in diameter. The valve is installed at the very end of the "elbow" where the main pipe turns around back to the boiler... meaning the farthest point from the boiler.
Thanks for the promp reply.

I'd vent your main
with a Gorton #2. If you can't find Gortons in your area, go to www.gorton-valves.com. Get in touch with Ken Kunz and tell him I sent you. He will see that you get your vent.
