Melting Downspout

I have a commercial building with frozen downspouts. They are frozen because they are full of condensate from 90+ furnaces (engineer's brilliant idea). I have a pipe thawing machine - what do you think of the feasability of thawing the downspouts with the pipe thawing machine. Obviously not a permanent solution. But we have to do something right now until we find a permanent solution.

    Joel,

While thats going on take a look at Raychem electric
heat tracing commercial - industrial grade stuff for
freeze protection. should be available at most industial
supply houses, stay away from the garden variety stuff.
this is a good idea anyway regardless of the unconventional
    means of condesate disposal.
if you have any questions email me, i've installed tons
of this stuff in process plants.

    regards, don

this is a good idea anyway regardless of the unconventional

if you have any questions email me, i've installed tons
of tape, induction and steam tracing in process plants.

if this is a new building or an older retofit i'm suprised
that the a/e firm didn't include this in their scope of work, real standard stuff for quite a while now.

    Frozen Downspouts

I have appox. 450 ft. of Reychem Wintergard Wet, heat cable. Part No. WGRD-H622-250. It's output is 6 watts per ft.@240VAC. It can be totally submerged and you can overlap it. It is made for the type application you have. You should use a thermostat to operate it, have it close when the temps drop below freezing. If you are interested in it, let me know for I will let it go at a decent price. Jon PS: This is the industrial heat cable Don has mentioned.

Joel & John Ref. Price on heat cable

I e-mailed Joel and have not recieved a response, but it looks as if my email did not get to him. So here is the price, a 250 ft. spool of Raychem Wintergard Wet, cost me last year at Graingers $1087.00 divided by 250 = $ 4.35 per ft. I overbought for the job and have 1 complete 250 fft spool and 1 with 200 ft on it for a total of 450 ft. for sale. If you take it all, you can have it for $1500.00 plus $30 shipping. That is less than $ 3.40 a ft. And that is the bottom price.
