Vince DiFilippo, a contractor in Paoli, Pa., was a hero recently. DiFilippo, also a contractor consultant for The Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration News, was helping out a friend who was concerned about her seven-year-old daughters health. She was sure something was wrong with her boiler but checks by the gas company and her former service contractor came up with nothing. DiFilippo visited the house, equipped with the CO detector (NCI model) he always carries in his pocket. The alarm went off immediately. Turns out the burners were partially blocked and CO was spilling out in the house to the tune of 2125 ppm on DiFilippos analyzer. The homes CO monitor hadnt alarmed.
DiFilippo opened all doors and windows and ordered the mother to take the daughter to the hospital and arrange for the proper tests. The boiler was eventually replaced and the young girl is feeling better again go figure.
What I find incredibly astonishing is the statement made by doctors who could not diagnose the girls problem. In a newspaper article the reporter wrote, The doctors confirmed the girls [two daughters in home] were exposed to heightened levels of carbon monoxide, but admitted to [the mother] Wendy that they never considered it as a possible cause of the illness, partially because it is uncommon, especially in suburban areas.
CO uncommon? Nice to know that the doctors feel secure in their rural setting.

Mr. DiFilippo
knows his business. The others did not- including the doctors. These two kids came out alive- what about the next one?
If you don't test, you're guessing!

Yup...
After I visited my best friends home in WA, I decided that his furnace installation scared me. I sent him two COExperts units as a baby shower gift. Perhaps not the sexiest gift on the planet, but if it saves one life, it's worth it weight in gold.
My structural engineer got one for Christmas, my in-laws got three. I'm quite impressed by the product!0
