Carlin EZ1 problems

Gary_15

I have a customer with a Carlin EZ1 oil burner, recent model. I've had a call to their place regarding no heat. It seems the electrode rods are moving away from the transformer contacts. I gently bend them back in place and the unit fires right off. Is this something you've run across? Are the electrode rods getting warm and moving from expansion? I've never run across it before. Your experiences would be appreciated.

I have not seen this happen, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Try posting over at oiltechtalk.com
Those guys will be able to shed some light on it for yoGo
  • Gary, this is a fairly new

burner from Carlin. I have one similar (gas) I just received at my center. I would say that adjusting them is the thing to do. I would not have an answer on this particular unit as to causing that problem it is too new to know yet. A lot of times it may have been moved slightly when installed. Maybe some of the oil guys over at OTT may know.

    Electrodes

    Gary,
Our electrodes do not move on their own or through expansion or contraction. When close our ignitor you should actually have to press slightly down in order to flip the anchors over and srew them down. This is because of the design of our secondary terminals (copper blades as opposed to springs which can slip to one side or another).
Was the gap ok? 1/8"-5/32"is what we accept for a gap and 5/16" above the oraface. Finally 1/16" to flush is acceptable for the throw ahead of the nozzle. We proveide a very handy gauge that does all this for you on both the EZ as well as one for the 99-100-101-102. If you'g like a couple email me back with an address.
I conclusion, can I assume that everything else on this job (pump, ignitor, motor, primary & draft) proved ok?
We have a great inside tech department 800-989-2275 ask for Mark Bryden. If he can't get the problem resolved for you thats when one of our outside guys (me) will go out with you. Good luck and get back to us.

    There was a problem

with the ignitors years ago, when you close the ignitor if it has solid bars they press on the electrodes and make them move out of place, but with the EZ and it's new electrode holder on the tube this is unlikely, but possible. What I used to do was save all my spring type connectors from Becketts and use them in place of the solid bar type, they make the connection but give. make sure the electrode bars aren't loose in the porcelains.

I've got all kinds of EZ1's and EZ2's running out there. I haven't seen any problem like your describing!

    yeah

like I said that was a problem with the 100's, 99's etc unless they have the buss bars on the transformer set so that it's crushing down when you close it???

    Follow up

After talking to several burner techs in my area, they basically gave the same suggestion of replacing the solid metal contacts with springs. I have a set and plan on trying that. Other than that, the burner is great. Thanks for all your input. The Wall has become both a great tool for me and an addiction. I check it almost daily.

Thanks Dan. The rest of the boiler is just fine. I'd like some of those tools. I'm at

Best burner made. We always insatalled Carlin even way back the old CRD 100's were a good burner if adjusted right. I'd like to see Carlin go back to the slide adjustment for the nozzle assembly I hate having to keep and save the slides
