Do heat calcs really work?

we did a 12,000 sq.ft. home, and the heat calcs called for 150K heatloss design temps. I went along with it with a lot of trepidition. But we have just gone through a 2 1/2 week priod where the temps actually dipped lower then design day a couple of nights. I was expecting to get a call from these customers, but nary a ringy-dingy!

Wow that feels good!!!!

    Therefore...

Your heatloss calcs are overstated, as we suspect most are. Had it been more accurate, you well may have heard about it. =)

    ahhhh,

But Uni, you forget, the calcs are for the whole house. and the chances of every zone calling for heat at thee samr time is remote.

    A heat loss calc

however accurate or inaccurate is just a snapshot, or point in time. The house may never be EXACTLY at that number as temperature, R-values, construction and the biggie INFILTRATION are impossibe to calculate exactly.

A closer calc would be to perform the load calc after the home is built! A blower door could pin down the infiltration much closer this way.

I suspect all programs have a bit of a fudge factor, and will usually cover you below design, to a point :)

Radiantly heated homes also benefit from a flywheel effect when the MRT is considered and all the objects in the room become emitters to carry through some below design periods.

Forced air isn't as forgiving in this aspect.
