Just got a call from the boss. Steam boiler cracked last night, have very little info as of yet, guess its about 70 yrs old, don't know where it is leaking yet, we have a guy going over there as I write this. Looking for any ideas on how we might cobble this thing together through the weekend.

depends
Below the water line try some boiler seal. Above it try some buckets and rag's down and hope for the best. Make sure the pressure's are as low as possible. Another thought is to bring in some temp heater's and set a temp propane tank. Depend's on who and what you have available...Good luck!!0 -
crack blr
Years ago when we had a leaker some times when we could get too the crack we'de hammer leadwool in to slow the water down as much as possible then add Soloder Seal Stop Leak and go from there. If it stoped we would drain the boiler to keep as much as possible out of the returnes lower the pressure and hope for the best.Good Luck!0 -
If above waterline...
try some high-temp furnace cement.0 -

really appreciate the response
the boiler gremlins were beating on her last night, three out of nine sections leaking and burners in bad shape. One had the end blown out of her. half way to a new boiler by the time we fixed her so I started to tear her out today. Got her drained, disconnected and stripped and three sections pulled apart in four hrs. Boy I wish I had had me working for me when I was in buisness for me. I jsut hope someone has a 760,000btu steam boiler around here on Monday. Will prolly install two instead. I have two 4" drop supplies going into a 4" header. Anything I should watch out for if we go to two boilers? I will prolly hook each boiler into each supply separately. I am assuming two steam taps off of each boiler. will tee both taps from one boilerinto each 4" supply going to header and as long as I don't bullhead that tee, I assume I will be alright. Just speculating each tap at two inch or less and two per boiler since we haven't found out what boilers are available yet. do appreciate all the input. I do love working on boilers. Just a bit wacky I guess0 -
series boilers
if you do two boilers you better use a detailed drawing for proper piping arrangement or you will be doing it more than once.0
