Is it a hot water system or steam?

I lost my boiler last year. The data plate says it was manufactured in 1935 by American Standard. I want a new boiler but would like to know what would be involved. Pipes are insulated with asbestos and I'd like to leave them alone. Can you recommend a boiler? Would it be wise to use the BTUh info on the plate when replacing? It's the best heat. I'm on forced air heating and hate it. Any info would be helpful and appreciated. There aren't any residential steam heat contractors in NC which is why we have the forced air heating system today.

Replacing an old boiler
I have used this site's search for a local contractor. There aren't any listed-not even 100 mile away! The only boilers around here are industrial and even those are few. Homes have long been retrofitted with forced air and new homes are all forced air.
When we bought this house, I had to import my father who was a boiler man in NYC. After he worked on it, he had to bless it. He said the blessing was more helpful than he was! It lasted another four years. I think he was being modest.
With that said, I don't think I can trust any contractorwho claims to be qualified when there is no market here. You know, practice makes perfect. So, any advice in what it would take in replacing this boiler would be helpful. Thanks.0 -
i belive you are saying what is true
i will say my peace to help you though near gaston are cotten t shirt factories etc they likely have underemployed people who are fine steam fitters crawling the walls to go to work as some of the factories were closed ii am thinking one of them would be of imense help to you. the switch out of a boiler is easy enough however the finer minor technicalities is pretty much a thing of experience.0 -
I know from my father's experience that the finer technicalities are what will make this needlessly expensive. Gaston is about 75 miles away. I'll look around for someone. Thanks.0
