bronze body pump required?

I have to replace a circulator on a hot water baseboard loop off the bottom of a steam boiler. The old circulator is a bronze body. Can I replace it with an iron body pump?

yes. People use the bronze one due to the corrosive nature of the condensate and the rust and stuff that accumulates in the system. It is suppose to last longer but that too is open to interpretation. Many years ago I only installed the bronze one, now its usually the cast one only because I've seen the good ones break just as often and quite frankly you can buy 4 pumps for what the bronze one costs. You choose, its only money!..Robert O'Connor/NJ

Unless I'm mistaken, the only time you are required to use a bronze bearing assembly/volute is when you have a pump in domestic hot water-but even then, you can use a standard motor to run it.
