oil fired boiler flue damper

Modern boiler and burners often employ an air intake damper that closes when the boiler stops. For example, the Beckett AFG burner. On a tight boiler, this virtually eliminates stack loss when the burner is off. I believe that flue dampers can be installed on other configurations, with the essential interlocks so that the burner cannot fire while the damper is closed. Others here may know of some. However, a four-degree temperature swing sounds uncomfortable. You should consider firing your boiler at least twice an hour. A standard Honeywell T87F can do that, and you can adjust the internal anticipator to get the cycle rate most comfortable to you.

    oil fired boiler flue damper

Why are flue dampers not installed on oil fired burners?
I have a one pipe steam system fired by a 1.8 gph arcoliner boiler. The system works reasonably well. There is a 4 degree differential in the thermostat so the house temprature will go down to 65 degree f, the boiler fires, rises to 69 degree f and the boiler shuts down. On a average winter day there is a 2 to 3 hour idle period between boiler firings. During this idle period the exhaust stack is very hot, which to me indicates the heat mass of the boiler is going up the chimeny. The arcoliner is a large boiler with appox. 50 gal water capacity. Why can't a motorized damper with the proper interlocks be intalled to conserve this heat?

In the '80 s this was very common. Stuck dampers, bad end swithes, freeze ups, nuisance odor calls, nuisance lock outs, burnt end cones, coked nozzles [due to excess reflected heat from hot refractory] kind of put an end to them.

By the '90 s it was common pratice to remove them, that or the old piece of junk less efficient boiler got replaced.

If you had to , you might still find one. Find one UL listed though. Flair, Maid-o-mist, are couple of old brand names I can remeber.

I want to thank you all for your advice. My boiler is fired by a beckett afg burner. Never relized there is a shut-off damper fitted in the gun. Air leaks could be a factor given the fact that there are 3 access doors in my boiler, all without gaskets. Will make an effort to eliminate any air leaks.
