pipe to nowhere

I'm no expert, but if that pipe is of any decent length, I'm guessing it's probably not totally useful to put an air vent on it (unless you put it at the start of the pipe).
Since it's capped off right now, the steam can't just waltz into the pipe and heat it up. An air vent, of course, would let the steam into the pipe. . . but why bother? You're just venting a pipe you didn't need anyway and using up some BTU's to heat excess pipe, too.
Well, those are my thoughts. Again, I'm not an expert. I just like writing.

We have a steam heating system and before we moved in the owners put a new pipe off the furnace to the kitchen, there was another pipe that I assume went to the kicthen previously, but when they put in the new piping they simply plugged up the end of the old pipe, could this be a source of extra air now and is it a safe place to add an air vent?
Thanks
