boiler hi/low settings

just moved into my first house. i live an hour north of NYC, and the past few days have been single digit temps! my thermostats are brand new. the upstairs this morning was set at 69 but was 65 actually. the downstairs was set at 68 but was 63 actually! just curious as to what settings the boiler hi/low should be set. when i checked it, the high was at 190, the low was at 140. is this right? or should the range be closer? both lower? both higher? i realize, with single pane windows, and a lot of them, i am losing heat. i am assuming, the builder (back in 1987) put in enough radiators, but who knows. seems like the boiler is cycling a lot, and going through more oil than i thought. any help would be great. thanks.

Hi Mike, welcome to the wall,
Typically, the lo is set at 140-160 and the hi is 20* higher. Since the lo setting is the temp that the reversing acting operates the circulator I usually leave it at 160* in the winter and if you have a coil in the boiler turn it down in the summer to 140* The hi is usually at 180-190. I hope this helps.
PS. I live about the same time away from the city (Kingston)
also did you set the heat anticipator correctly on the t'stats?

mike are you setting back the temperature at night?--it sounds like you have a setback thermostat and you may be setting back too far --depending on the thermostat you probably don't have a smart stat---that will adjust and creep the temp up slowly to get your desired temp at the set time ---if its the normal setback stat --it will start the system at the set time for the temperature change --and will take some time to recover0
