steam rad. repair

Hi, In several days, I will be replacing a leaking push nipple in a single pipe system. There is a small recess between the nipple seating area (just past where the crown of the nipple will be). Does this need dope, or packing applied? Also, do the flat mating surfaces between sections need a thin gasket, or dope, or nothing.
Thanks !
Thanks !

I usually
put some Teflon dope on the nipple and in the sockets where the nipple goes in, to make it go in more easily. The flat portion around the nipple socket is a faced joint. It should not leak if drawn up tight, but a little Permatex wouldn't hurt.
