Screws and plates
Wayne,
Best suggestion is to get a couple of real small screw guns, say of the 7.2 volt version (around 20 bucks or so). Put away the large monsters like any 14.4 volters.
When installing the trak at this stage of the game, 3 screws are all you need to hold it up until the pex comes (one in the middle, one on each end on opposite sides.
You typically don't need all 10 screws in the plates, just as long as the plates are in contact with the subfloor.

plates
We bought a collated screw gun with a 24" extension. Set the plates with one screw, then go back and screw them all up. You can get strips of 50 or so screws and the extension keeps the drill at an easy working height. If you dare, try a set of sheetrocker stilts to get you up to working height, if you're vertically challenged....

What brand screw gun? I looked at some Hilti's today but they didn't handle shorter screws. I don't want to come up through the floor. WW

Hey Wayne
We have a plate job coming up.
Why don't you come up here and install the plates for me?
My arm hurts just thinking about it.

Brand?
I got a used roofing nailer and took it to get checked out at a repair shop. I told them about using (and even supplied them some) 3/4 inch nails. It took 3 tries and they gave my money back, because it wouldn't shoot right.
I think Hot Rod uses Makita and I can't find any around here.
Oh well....

Hey Mark
My solution to the hurting arm was to give the job to my helper, but he really slows down when I'm not leading the charge. As for coming up North,... I think I'd rather head down to Jeff Lawrence's part of the country. :P WW

I went and looked
at roofing nail guns. Has anyone had success with them??? I could go ahead and use the 3 screw method to get the plates in place and then come behind with some mechanical aid like a roofing nail gun to expediate the rest of the fastening. Are there any concerns about nails backing out over time? Screws would not be a concern in that possibility. WW

Dave,
We've been using a 9.6 Makita cordless impact wrench, but my arm is still hurting despite it being so light. I'm overdue for surgey on my forearm for tendinitis so I can't over do on jobs like this. Getting old, getting old. I should really be passing off the work and being a sales engineer, bur in the field is where the fun is. WW

coming up!
I've got a plate job to start as soon as I can.
It's a nice crawlspace. They even had lights in it when I checked the job out.

Screw Gun
Wayne, we use a Senco screw gun, battery powered for puting the intial screws in to hold the plates up and then an electric one with a extension. Screws come in a strip. As John states we work off baker staging for the intial plate and then from the ground for the finish up.0 -
OK
Let's all go help Jeff.
I'm afraid of spiders so the crawl space is out of the question.
I'll throw tools to you guys in the crawl space.
