Back to the wall with my old 2pipe vapor

This is my 3rd winter in my house 2nd winter with having my wonderful steamer running like a dream. With the help of Steamhead and Mad Dog she runs great.

The last 5 days we have had temps of about -5 to -10 degrees so that old boiler has been a humming. Last night I came home and noticed that one of the rads on the first floor was making a tingging sound in the last 2 or 3 sections on the return side of the Rad, this is the largest rad in the house about 4 ft long. It almost sounded as if there was a piece of metal bouncing around in the rad. It sounded as if it were towards the top of the Rad. It did it for about an hour and then stopped. I have never heard this sound before in any of the Rads. Was wondering if you had any thoughts as to what could have caused this?

Just an FYI I have 2 Gorton #2's on the main and 2 #2's along with a Hoffman 75 on the Return side.

Your thoughts are appreciated
Bryan

    Hmmmmmm

maybe that end of the rad was dirty inside from not having gotten steam in so long, and the steam was cleaning it out. See if it makes the sound again.....

thats what I was thinking. I figured with the boiler running so much the steam possibly pushed some debris and it was hung up in the rad before working its way out.
    Thanks

    This is a stretch

It could be just some thermal expansion. The radiator probably hasn't got that hot and all the way across in a long while. Combine some particularly cold draught from the window and maybe this is an answer.

Did the radiator get slowly hotter over the hour? Maybe it needed to stretch itself out of one position. Now it is done.

Hey Mad Dog we are doing well. Congratulations on the pregnancy I hope all goes well for you and your wife. You just cant top having kids. We are expecting in May as well. Glad to hear your mom is doing well she is one tough woman.

As far as that Rad goes it seems to be back to normal I suspect something just broke free in the pipes, the only reason I had asked was it was a noise I had never heard before.

One other question for you guys I notice that my house has been extremely dry running at 17 to 20% humidity. I do have water containers that hang on the back of the rads but it doesnt do to much good. Any suggestions for that?

    Thanks again

    Humidty

How about a room humidifyier where needed? Just don't go over 30 percent relative, because excess moisture will end up at the dew point inside your exterior walls (and on your window sills), unless very well constructed with permeability in mind.
