Safety Switch

Hi ---

I have a Beckett boiler (don't know the model number) with a Honeywell 8184G protectorelay controller. Just in the last day, the safety switch has started popping up. I will go down to the celler and reset it and the burner will fire right away. The switch seems to invariably pop open again, though. Sometimes it is fairly quick - it'll pop up in just a few minutes but other times the boiler will run for a few hours and then it pops up.

I'm not looking to do any repairs myself, but i am looking for possible reasons why this is happening. Do I need to get my oil tank filled up? Is there a vacuum in the oil line? And why does the switch come up in the first place - is it sensing that the burner is not firing?

The boiler just underwent and inspection/cleanout/maintainance procedure just about two months ago and has been running great up to now.

I appreciate any comments!

Thanks

Doug

    Thanks for the reply.

But do have any information that you can give about the switch. I really don't like to have work done on anything of mine without at least a general knowlege of how it works or why it is there in the first place.

    Thanks

    lot's of possible answer's

It could be the cad cell is not sensing. It could be the unit is overaired. It could be the primary control itself is bad. Best to have a pro come in and run a complete diagnostic before it get's worse...
  • Kinda harsh there Eddie

No need to reiterate his lack of competancy in handling the repair himself . Doug said in his original post he knows professional help is needed .

Doug , it really could be a number of things happening . No fuel in the tank , clogged oil lines , leaky oil lines , clogged filter-strainer-nozzle , bad cad cell or eye . Just to name a few . This type of problem is hard to diagnose over the net . Do you have a service contract with the last company that came out ?

This is the type of calls I mainly do and it can sometimes be a challenge being right there. Call someone in and let us know what was found.

    Good Luck,

This is your Primary control, not only can a number of things cause this to lock out, all of which are safty issues, but the more you reset the control, the closer the control is to failing itself and you will not only have to fix the original problem, but you will find yourself replacing the primary control as well.
