I have a customer who's kitchen is always cold.
The house was built in the 1930's and has the old cast iron column radiators. The kitchen was remodeled and an addition put on the kitchen by the previous owners. The old cast iron radiator was removed and replaced with 2 Burnham type radiant radiators recessed in the wall. I did a heat loss for the house and found kitchen heat loss 13,500 btus and radiators serving kitchen to be 14,500 btus. Should be ok. The rest of the house I found the existing radiators to be oversized by as much as 50%. It is my belief that the rest of house heats up before kitchen.
Option 1 - Put kitchen on seperate zone
Option 2 - Add kick space heater under cabinets so that kitchen has 50% more btus needed like rest of house.
I am leaning toward option 1

Maybe a simpler solution
If the system qualifies.
1930's hot water system. If it was a gravity circulation system that is now pumped you MAY have some LUCK in adjusting the hand valves on the other rad's in the home. Cut them back to pursuade more of the exisitng flow to the kitchen.
If this is feasible, you can even (maybe) show the homeower how to balance the system and they can make the fine adjustments themselves.
Water will always take the path of least resistance. Can you make the oversize rads more resistant to flow than the kitchen?

Yes, It is a convereted gravity system. I am reluctant to balance system by radiator valves for 2 reasons. I already had a service because the dining room was not warm and found valve closed also even if I can balance system how long would it be before someone changed the settings. I think it would cost more installing balancing valves on radiators than rezoning.0 -

oops the boiler switch was turned off when the fuel oil was do to be delivered,only is ?is no bolly thought of turning it back on ....same words of wisdom.0
