Hot Water Heater

I'm planning on replacing my 40 gal hot water heater (gas) with a 50 gal tank. Anyone have information on which are the best models/most efficient tanks to buy? Not sure whether to just get one from my local home depot or buy from a plumbing store?
Thanks

Ditto on the supply house. Remember this. A larger tank will NOT give you more hot water, necessarily. It's the BTU input that really counts. A 40 gal, 30K heater will only give you a few more gallons of hot water than a 30 gal, 30K heater will. There will be a little less recovery cause it has to heat more water. So if you go to a bigger tank, talk to a pro (not a sales clerk) about higher recovery and BTU input on your larger tank.

heaters come with...
...a "first hour rating". That is how many gallons they can deliver in one hour starting with a fully heated tank. That's the number you need to compare rather than gallons.

On Demand Hot Water Heater
You might want to look at a Noritz or Rinnai tankless on demand hot water heater. They will give you hot water at a lower operating cost0
