Is this a Hartford Loop

Please forgive my non-digital photo, but after reading
Dan's book, I began to study the piping around my
boiler and can't quite figure if I have a true Hartford Loop.

Based on my drawing, can anyone help me?

Thanks, JC

    You're right.

No true loop. The header is also incorrectly piped. You pipe to the system after you connect both boiler risers then drop into the equalizer. The Hartford loop typically is a tee in the equalizer 2-4" below low level mark, then drop to wet returns..Robert O'Connor/NJ

    Thanks Robert,

Since the piping is not correct, what problems may
be associated with it? It's an old system that appears
to be original to the house (65 years old). Even though
it's old, it runs very even and quiet.

    Thanks,

    JC

    Jeff..

Look to the left and click on the Library. At the bottom, then click on (or scroll down) to steam heating. I think you'll find you're answer there or if you have the manufacturers installation instructions available, this will show correct near boiler piping. If the system works as you say, the header mis-pipe may not be so critical, although installation of the loop is recommended..Robert O'Connor/NJ

te check valve is taking the place of the HFD loop...

ie the purpose of the Hartford loop is to keep the boiler level from dropping down when the water level rises at the other end of the steam header in the basement – in your case the check valve is doing the same thing, you must have one clean system if it’s still working after all these years, as the checks tend to get sludged up, the Hartford loop has no moving parts to fail – but if it’s working great don’t mess with a thaaangg!!!
