two old friends collaborate on high tec job.

Jimmy and i met years ago when we both worked for a well established third generation long island plumbing and heating concern.I was at the company first , and when the mechanic i was working with at the time told me that we were about to be gracedwith "thee best" heating man on long island ,i thought to myself..."we'll see!" It didn't take long to see that mike was correct. The man completed the work of three good men in a day,was as meticulous as i was about quality and could wire any boiler - Tekmar controls you name it he got it up and running. Before long , jimmy and i were talking of the future and where we wanted to take this passion that we both deeply -share.Jimmy taught me much of what i know of heating in general, wireing ,and even gave me some of the great steam ideasi use today. I taught him all i knew about plumbing and the steam. Then we went our seperate ways...I went back to the union and then got my plumbing licence and went out on my own. Jimmy Also went out on his own doing Huge radiant jobs, snowmelt, buderus, the stockbauer method,viessmann..you name it ! he did it.Fast forward a few years ... we got back in touch, and began to team up on some larger jobs that neither wanted to takle alone. This job we are showcaseing here is one such project. The house was converted over from hot water baseboard to 5 radiant zones 1 baseboard loop & indirect hot water heater. We relocated the boiler from under the stairs to the garage where it is direct vented. We install a 275 oil storage tank in back of garage . We did it all here,in slab ,staple up ,and over sub floor with sleepers. We used primary secondary injection for radant with a tekmar 364 reset control, mixing & domestic water. We've both done fancier ann purdier jobs, but keep in mind this was done on tight budget and a tight schedule as we both had to squeeze it in to our crazy schedules. The fellas we did it for are friends, so they bought the materials and we installed. We had a good time putting it in and even better time watching this kitty do her thang. It was a pleasure to work with my old buddy and i look forward to more special projects like this . Jimmy and I are both listed on find a professional.Gentleman Jimmy Burke & Matt Mad dog Sweeney.

    Nice Job!

I see that you took a page from Ron Jr. in terms of shoehorning the maximum amount of heating appliance into the minimum of space. :-)

I really like the direct-vent setup as installed, very clean. It's hard to make PEX behave and conform to the same straightness standards as your copper though. I don't know the limitations of the job, but it's too bad you weren't able to showcase your meticulous work across more of the wall instead of having to do it all 3D in the space between the boiler and the wall.

Either way though, I am sure that your friends are psyched and fortunate indeed to have two pros like yourself doing such an install. It should provide them with years of comfortable, cost effective heat.

    Exactly!!!!!

We tried believe me...but Ho's want their space......They will be enclosing it in a room with two big swing out doors for nice access. Yep, Ron knows those tight as a Bird Dog's tookus Levitt installations. Actually this was a Levitt house too. If I can get my camera to download the pics I took the next day, it shows better angles and the neatened up version of the wiring. Thank you for the kind words Constan. Mad Dog

    Collaborative

efforts can be one of two things: heaven or hell! Obviuosly the two of you respect each other's skills and talents and have come close to "mechanical nirvana". I knew you were a CLASS ACT the first time we met at Dan's seminar. My better half (oops BEST) still talks about meeting you as well. When we return (and we will) to the "Big Apple" I hope to have the luxury of time to spend with you. Unfortunately our plans are on hold for this season. Once I am able to walk again I want to reinstate our plans to return to New York for at least 2 weeks.
OK, I've babbled long enough. Excellent job,all the best and keep the bar high for the rest of us.

    An excellent

concept. More companies should consider this "jobshare" approach. Works nicely for the one man shops, IF you find another contractor that shares your practices. Like four hands connected to one brain :)

Looks like you have found a match! and had fun doing the job together. A win for all involved, including the homeowner.

Are you laid up for awhile? Hope you feel better soon..rememeber, swimming is great rehab. Don't worry, I'll save up some real pain in the ----- steam jobs we can work on. That is one of the best compliments a man could get a class act, because that is what I try to be. Thanks Mad Dog

    Sorry

    used my trick finger
  • Hey Matt , you were in my stomping grounds

and didn't give me a call ? This type of install is the best thing for the homeowner . The house originally had radiant heat , and it's just plain proper to give it back to 'em . Did they happen to be living in the home when the old radiant was still working ?

How do you like the direct vent Peerless ? I saw one in operation at my buddy's home and they are whisper quiet . Very nice pipework Matt and Jimmy .

    Ouch!

I hope you have a very speedy and full recovery.

This made me recall a carpenter friend many years ago who slipped off a second storey roof. His safety line caught just before he hit the ground; 4' up from terra firma. The doctor told him that if hadn't been wearing the belt, he probably would have broken his leg and there was a chance that he might have broken both legs. Instead he broke his back! The worst part was that he had just gotten married less than a month before that and suddenly found out he was ummm... "benched" for 6 months.

Working with a friend is the best way to roll,

you get a chance to turn a hand with someone who doesnt let the thought drop out the other ear,you can play outta either set of toolbuckets, it all comes together no matter what side of the room your buzy at,and when the work just melds into place no one could read the signature its just too good to read*~/:) it is a great way to spend some time sharing ideas and insights and experiences ...

Great stuff pal. Your story make me want to work with my old Pal again. He and I started at the same company about the same time and where instant friends. Studied and took our Journeymans and Masters together. He now owns the company.

Nice looking work, my first thought was " Wow, who did the soldering " . Nice neat work, it really is art.

Glad you had fun and showed us the photos. Keep up the great work Pal.

By the way, thanks for the memorys of the Doors. I had'nt thought of the Soft Parade in years :). I can remember my parents opening the door to my brother and my room and shake their head when Jim would be doing his rant. I think they where very concerned about us and probably should have been :).

    Dawg Nice Work

Glad that it worked out well teaming up with another pro. I expect nothing less than your normal standard of professionalism. If anyone else is interested in this concept, I can next day air Mark anywhere in the US for a nominal fee. I would gladly get rid of him I mean in the spirit of helping others let him go for a while. CO stories have a additional fee.

yeah we had our hands full no time to play. Actually it is a Meenan account too! It was very queit. You know me, I would've preferred a Burnham, but it wasn't our decision. Neverthe less Peerless is a fine boiler. Thanks again Ron. we'll catch up for a beer soon. Matt

Jimmy wouldn't let me touch his precious "secondary loop" that he prefabbed on the garage floor, but I did most of the rest as he did the real thinking and wiring the TEkmar. Yeah Morrison was a sick but brialliant pup. I idolized him in High school....used to be told I looked like him a lot hwen I had long shaggy har like Jim. Mad Dog
