Veco System Questions

I have a few questions about steam heat and the VECO Vapor system in particular.

• When installing a drop header does the header have to be 24” off of the water line or can the riser be above 24” above the water-line. (I have noticed in some of the pictures in the library that the header itself looks very low but the riser go up very high)

• In a VECO System I am working on now (see attached picture). There are two dry returns that come off of the two main steam lines. What was there original purpose? To bring any condensate in the main back to the return? Can and should they be vented?

• On a VECO System can the air vents be directly over the drops to the wet side of the return? In the Lost Art and other books I have read it says they should always be @ least 18” back. Is that the same for this system? (It was originally done with the vents directly above the drops, about 5’ above the Hartford loop water level in the returns)

• Has anyone ever cleaned the p-traps in a Veco system? It looks as if they are brass p-traps with brass plugs. Do you just remove the plug and stick wire in there?

• Has anyone ever taken apart the supply valve and oiled/greased them so they are operable? How hard was this to do?

Thank you for your time,

Jamie

jamie...I'm not an expert, but, to answer some of your questions...i did put my vents 15" back...running a wire through a p trap is needed only if the radiator is clogged, and taking apart quintuple valves is work...i used very small amounts of oil...the idea is to get the spring operable again...john

    John,

Did you have to take the valve completely apart to do this?

Was there a special way they had to line up when you put them back together?

What type of oil did you use?

    Thanks, Jamie
