Coil leak inside the steam boiler

I was all set to install a boiler under the stairs in a Levitt home - and the wall was already cut for us . Then this one comes in . Always a Friday .

This was in an absentee landlord's home . The tenant told us he was emptying gallons upon gallons of water every day . We get there and the steam mains are full , the rads are full and shooting out water from the vents . The basement was flooded in more than a few places . What a nightmare . And the torrential rain didn't help matters any .

The HB Smith had 2 boiler risers going into a partial counterflow , partial gravity return main . It was the first time in a long time since we've seen insulated mains .

Comments

  • Once again

we used the Burnham V84 for steam . We also used a probe LWCO and auto feeder to make the system as hands off as possible ( the tenant told us he had no clue about blowing down the old LWCO , didn't even know what it was ) .
  • Here's Kenny's handiwork

He was real proud that he connected it all without any help from the rest of us . Now that he's got the Hartford Loop licked , hes graduatiing to the near boiler header .

    Nice job Ron.

You guys are getting spoiled ! Look at all that room for the proper "A" demension, and you went drop header anyway. What a trooper.

The understair job can wait a couple days. You HAD to do this one. Steam in a standup basment, on Friday, maybe the company is getting soft brother. (treating you with "kid gloves" to make sure you stick around ?) Chris

P.S. , Keep Kenny going at it too. He did a fine job on the loop. Maybe a speed piping course is in order? (break out the stopwatch and tell him you're timing him. It'll drive him nuts but he'll get the same treatment I did breaking into the field. It also got me off the end of a cleaning brush in short order!) J.C.A.

    drop header

since we do almost now steam here, only in old apt bldgs built before ww1, i was interested in the drop header. Never see anything like that here. Would you enlighten?
  • There was plenty of room

near the boiler , but not much anywhere else . We had about a 2 foot path through a few rooms , but we lucked out with a wide cellar entrance . This was the first time I took out this series HB Smith , and they are HEAVY . The power handtruck made hauling it out much easier . Oh yeah , the boiler under the stairs went anyway - my caring supervisor made the suggestion ( demand ) that I switch and do the steamer . Normally I'd fight it a bit , but this time there was plenty of help .

Kenny's been working with me on and off since I started in 1986 . After his morning job doing evictions , he would come into the city and help us finish a steamer maybe 2 or 3 times a week . He can do everything I can . But then , what'll I do ? Sweep the floor ? Pretty soon he won't need a speed course . Through attrition we're losing a few installers so he's gonna be stepping up .

    Thanks alot Chris .
  • Yeah , I never seen them either

until Noel Murdough posted a picture of his drop header steam boiler . The main reason I started using them is to make the connection between the 2 boiler risers much easier . Also it gives the header extra swing joints in case something expands more than the header can handle without the drop . And last , in my humble opinion , it does cut down on water carryover into the system piping . No hard data on this , it's just my gut intuition .
