\"Manual\" setting on gas fired steam boiler

I noticed a valve on my gas fired steam boiler that says "manual operation". It appears to be a valve I could turn on and off-and it's inside the boiler shell area. Is this something I could use when the power is out, and the thermostat won't call for heat, etc.? I realize if it does work, I'd have to watch pressure builds, etc.
  • Manual operators on gas boilers

can be very dangerous. It is my recommendation to remove all gas valves that have "manual operators" on them.

In my 40 years in the gas business I have seen too many boiler explosions caused by valves left on manual.

    .

i just had to deal with this type of valve -3-wire solenoid seperate regulator --24 volt system had 2 pilot sensors wired in series thermostat to limits and the gas valve--standing pilot--no safety factor --the pilots when put out the switch remained closed feeding power for 15 seconds or so ------custmer had no heat --the valve was bad looked further into it ,,boiler sections plugged solid w/soot -----had to have the chimney swept boiler cleaned and upgraded the gas valve ---the customer was squacking about the price of the newer valve compared to a solenoid valve -THERE IS NO WAY I WAS INSTALLING A SOLENOID VALVE
