they do work and are also great for teaching a customer how powerburners make chimney roar. As Dan H. says, 'ya gotta get out of the basement'.

    Stethoscopes come in several varities and in different price ranges the main difference in price is the quality of the stethoscope. The higher the quality of the stethoscope the more you will be able to hear and more importantly you will be able to DIFFERENTIATE what you hear. I'm an RN and I use a electronic stethoscope because I have to differentiate between subtle heart sounds and lung sounds an it allows me to do so. It's also personal preference. I would suggest doing a google search for stethoscopes. Or you could go to www.allheart.com and pick a midrange litmann stethoscope. They are excellent stethscopes and will allow you to differentiate what you hear.

    In a pinch

    You can use a 2' section of broom handle, or any scrap of wood laying around. You'd be surprised at how much you can hear through it.
