Gas logs

I have always heard that if a gas log has yellow-tipped flames it is because there is incomplete combustion and CO is being produced. For that reason, if you want some yellow flames for aesthetics reasons, it needs to be a vented fireplace.

I took my CO Experts detector over to my daughter's house, fired up her un-vented gas log, complete with yellow tipped flames, and in half an hour I was unable to detect any CO whatsoever in the room.

What am I missing?

    Input

If you checked over the flame with a co detector meant for quick response in a flue you would see some co. The way the unvented stuff get's the ok is to keep the input low and if you read the fine print you're supposed to keep a window open when using it. And of course there's the moisture issue.

    Um, ahem....

Did I mention this was my DAUGHTER'S fireplace?

I have a fully vented, wood burning version at my own home for that sort of activity....

    Jim,

Follow the link to HVAC Talk. This is the Fireplace section. Ask over there from the professional fireplace techs their opinions regarding vent free gas products. Or do a search on "Vent free" or "unvented". It will be a real eye opener. BTW, you will see my posts there on the topic.
