Question for steamhead or mad dog

The pressure gauge attached directly into the side of my boiler (Burnham Independence PV, PIN 4PV) failed. I would like to replace it and attach it like this: Install a union on the pigtail, a short nipple, a Tee, two short nipples to go horizontal right and left from the Tee, two elbows to come back to verticle, two more unions and attach the new gauge to one side and the vaporstat to the other. I was thinking that this would facilitate any future dissassembly and/or maintanence. Are there any drawbacks to doing this?

    Nope, I like your thinking

What I try to do is come out of the boiler with a long nipple and go directly in to a tee, which looks north and south. This way all the mud and crud has a nice resting place and if blown down once a season will never make it to the pigtail or the guage and pressuretrol. I sometimes put a small ball valve and plug to make it real easy to flush this mud leg. Traveling North out of the top of the tee, I try to get the gauge and pressuretrol as high up out of the "maelstrom" as possible. They read more accurately and don't get as beat up. Maybe you can see what I did with my own boiler in this pic. Mad Dog

    thanks

Thanks. As for the thinking, advice from my grandfather when I was a kid, think it through and do it right the first time.

    Mad Dog...

Can I put a TEE on my water cut-off where my pigtail exists now with the pressuretrol?

I would run one pigtail to the pressuretrol and one to the pressure gauge.

    I wouldn't bother because.......................................

The low water cutoff is your mud leg...just be sure to flush it out regurlary. Mad Dog

  • I think he meant

off of the 1/4 inch hole in the top of a 67 . Sounds like a good place to install the gage , just be sure to put the tee after the pigtail to protect the new gage also .

    That's exactly what...

    I meant.

Maybe I will try that. What is a good gauge to use on a low pressure steam sysytem. My gauge on my G-3 American Standard Boiler has stopped working...EVEN before I bought the house 7 years ago.

One other question on the pressuretrol...

Which model vaporstat can I use on a millivolt, one-pipe system if I remove the CURRENT, honeywell pressuretrol...and will I get better efficiency or quicker heating?
