Glass Gauge Water Boiling

I live in an old 19th century house which uses a converted coal boiler to provide steam heat. I have found that the only way I can get the second floor to heat is to crank up the thermometer, however doing so causes the water in the glass gauge to boil. Is this a problem, and can anyone suggest a more cost effective manner to get heat upstairs. Thanks in advance!

    Gauge Glass

Turning up the thermostat will make all the water in the boiler to boil . If the water is bouncing in the glass then the boiler water needs to be skimmed...

Do you have one pipe steam system ?

Thanks for the reply Ed. I have a two pipe system. All the radiators will heatup at the high temp, but dont stay warm when i return the thermostat to 68.

    Heat Loss

The second floor has a higher heat loss then the first floor. Heat loss has to do with the amount of out side walls, ceilings, windows and insulation.

Since you say every radiator heats up a the same time your system is fine.

I would look to choke the first floor or unrestrict the second to balance..

First make sure upstairs radiators are unrestricted . If radiator covers are used make sure they designed for maximum heat out put.....
