Leaking Weil Mclain steam boiler

to a Burnham V83 steam boiler with matching Riello burner . We increased the boiler header to 2 1/2 . I wanted to throw in a probe LWCO as a backup , but we didn't have any around . I explained how extremely important it is to flush the cutoff - I get the feeling it fell on deaf ears .

The Hartford Loop looks a little long before it drops down . We really had no room to pipe in a street ell . We kept the Loop about 4 inches below the nornal water line to keep it trouble free . Hope it works .

  • We swapped this one out last week

Somehow the customer forgot we were coming . The hallway going to the Bilco doors was blocked with stuff . As usual , we got stuck moving all the crap .

From the condition of the basement , I can guess this was destroyed by neglect . I like how the coil pipes came down about 2 feet away from the boiler . And the seudo-equalizer .

    Nice job (as usual) Ron.

Is that Kenny bent over in the plumbers position? I've taken to tossing a handfull of snow into the "plumbers crack" and watching the reaction.Subtle but starteling.

Longer tee shirts are the answer! Happy New Year brother.
I'll drop you an email this evening. BIG NEWS!!!! Chris

    Nice Work!

Got an old Weil-Mclain that leaked. Put a new threaded rod in about 7 years ago and it's still runnin' strong!

just curious, is there a way to tell the age of my boiler? It's a model EG45, but I can't find a date on it anywhere. Will I?

    The serial number

may contain a date code. If you contact someone at Weil-McLain they would know.

    ,

    .
  • You caught me

Yep , that is a Weil swich plate . We don't need them on the replacement GE hangers so I recycle them . The Taco relay is to run the burner . Speaking of which , does Riello have a primary control with a T-T relay built in for steam systems ? Thanks alot David .
  • The dialectric unions

are not necessary in my humble opinion . I've replaced tons of steam boilers with a transition from copper to steel and havent seen any problems or buildup at the connections .

I'm loving the drop header . This particular one would've been kinda hard to line back up to the existing piping . That is , without the extra swing joints in the drop . Thanks Patrick .
  • That's Kenny

assuming the position . I'd love to try the snow down the crack trick , but these guys would get me back even worse . Thanks Chris , I'll check my email now.
  • I was curious

what would happen if you have an abnormally long horizontal pipe out of the Hartford Loop tee , before it drops down ? Would the problem be minimized if the Loop tee is lower than normal ? Thank you Frank .
  • Did you have to

replace all the O rings also ? And did you find out why it leaked ? I have to admit , O rings make replacing a section or fixing a leak alot easier than working out push nipples .

Like Steamhead said , the serial number should be on the boiler somewhere . Many manufacturers incorporate some date code in the serial number . I'm not sure if Weil Mclain does it though . Thanks alot John .
  • We've been working

pretty steady through the holidays . Usually there'll be a lull in the work , not this year . I think we installed this one on New Years Eve . Thank you Lchmb .

    Header Question

Nice job as usual Ron, I have a question on header height. Looking at the block wall, I'm guessing you had over 5 feet from the water line to the header, I don't know what they want with that boiler but I'm guessing you had a good reason to put the header up high since I'm thinking it had you use more pipe.

    Ron Jr.

We replaced nothing but the threaded rod.

Fortunately it was my house, so we had the luxury of tightening a few turns every day over a few a days. (we didn't want to over-do it!)

The first snug we put on it resolved 90% of the leak the other 10% was resolved over the next several days.

just asking but have you had any problems using a ball valve on the wet returns...after a few years

and for future refrance if you run into a situstion like it again maybe you could try a copper Y insted of the t-y and 90
  • Boiler age

Weil doesn't put anything anywhere on the boiler that would give you it's age (major pain in the **** for me). You have to call their support line and give them the CP # from the sticker (these days it has a bar code with it) and they will tell you how old it is. Phone # is 219-879-6561 - Anybody from Weil-Mclain listening? get with the game... This stuff isn't top secret is it?
  • We went high

with the header so a seviceman can get to the top to clean it out . There wasn't much room on the right side . And from what I hear , the higher , the better . Thanks alot Dale .
  • No problems yet

I usually don't go back on an install , but my servicemen buddies would've told me if they had a hard time closing the ball valve .

We tried locating a copper T-Y for steam jobs , it's impossible to find out here on L.I. . Sorta like the hit and miss with cast iron fitting above 2 inch . Thanks Jesse .

What are the benefits of a drop header? I don't think I ever saw one before.
