vertical check valve

that needs a vertical check valve on the return. The return is a tree with 4 returns teeing in and the bottom one is the indirect. I foresee ghost flow in the Summer. The flow is going downhill. Do they make spring loaded check valves at 1 1/4" that would work in a hydronics system like that? Thanks for any help. WW

vertical check valves
We just used a regular old water pump check valve on a recirc loop. Believe it or not, they are temperature rated for such an application....only spring loaded one I could find in hurry.

Interesting.
I'll ask at the old plumbing supply house tomorrow. I've been thinking of re-piping to fit a horizontal run in there somewhere just so I'm using familiar flo checks. It would look funny though. WW

Have you seen the Hydrotrol from Bell & Gosset?

It will work Vert, Horizontal or Angle.

Size the check to the flow rate, not
the pipe size or you will have some fluttering noise. Even with spring checks!
Do the math and check the manufactures flow rate and Cv, but I have found one, and sometimes two, sizes smaller than the pipe are adequate to move the load quietly.

Wayne,
Stadler/Viega make an 1-1/4 spring check. I've used many and have had zero problems. A few of the others I've seen/used tend to rattle when running all by themselves. The Viega ones are the best I've seen so far. Chris0 -

The flow rate will vary since it is multiple zones. If only one zone is calling and it's a mixxing valve the flow could be very small, and suseptible to flutter. However if all zones are calling, too small a cv and I will be restricting flow. Another conundrum. I am looking at the Hydortrol literature and it does not give cv but has a chart of gpm and associated pressure drop. I might just try the well pump spring check and see if it flutters. I found one and it's only 15 bucks. The Hydrotrol looks like it should work so I'll keep that as back up. I will also consider the Stadler /Viega but I don't know who the local distributer is around here. Thanks for all of your input. It will be fun seeing what works. WW

Watch for temperature ratings
and also the spring "pop" pressure. Seems the ones with stiff springs, like a well check intended to operate at high pressure, might be the rattlers
I've used Watts and Conbraco with the teflon soft seats and check disc. Stay away from brass to brass surfaces or the thin rubber flapper types. Also ones with tapered cones instead of the flat disc are more friendly to constant flow, and create less flow turbulance.
In other words shop for a hydronic check
This is the check from the Grundfos Super Brute. Works great at the various flow and motor speeds due to the shape and design of the check.
