    BUILDING CODE PROBLEM

BECAUSE OF CHEMICAL STORAGE I'M REQUIRED TO RAISE BOILER 18IN.OFF FLOOR-IN MY CONTRACT I HAVE PROTECTED MY SELF WITH A SPERATE ROOM OR CURB AS EXTRAS TO JOB. INSPECTOR SAYS NEITHER MEETS CODE, & I NEED TO SHOW SOMETHING FOR HIM TO HANG HIS HAT ON IF HE GOES FOR EITHER. ANY IDEAS OUT THERE? HELP, ELECTRICAL WILL BUY OFF WITH CURB AND I CAN'T GET PAYED IF RAISE IT ONLY.

    well...

Are you going to get paid if you don't pass inspection ? Quit trying to skirt the code and bite the bullet. A platform won't hurt that much, and if it does, you didn't quote enough anyway. Besides, who wants to work around an 18" curb ?

    Just to clarify, Jay.

The inspector is telling you that neither the separate room for the boiler, nor a raised pad pass code?

If I read this correctly, I would ask him what exactly he wants.

can the chemicals be stored elsewhere? If they're flammable, they shouldn't be anywhere near the boiler room anyway.
  • Know the code

It does pay to know the building codes before you bid the job... If the boiler is in any area in or adjacent to where there may be flamable vapors, the ignition source must be 18" off the ground. This can be as simple as a pile of concrete block with a few bags of quickcrete to tie it together... Like the previous post says, if you didn't bid enough to absorb something like that... well, eat it and learn for the next time...
