Leaks

How long should a heating system last?
We have several buildings that have leaky heating systems. Some are "open" some are "Closed". We use a purple colored water treatment, therefor it's easy to tell domestic/rain water from heating water. The corner stone on one paticular building says 1967. If you close a valve (on the heating system) it may not reopen. It may leak. It will probably be tight. The heating units dont put out much heat. There are many drips, some at valves, some not. We have many purple colored spots on our insulation.
Is this normal?
Thanks,
Dave

Dave, a heating system is like any other mechanical animal: It's life expectancy is solely linked to the quality of the materials used and the quality of the maintenance of its parts.
I have seen systems much older that 1967 vintage that are still working and producing heat and comfort like they did the day they were installed. It would do you well to hire a professional heating contractor or engineer to evaluate your systems and set up a maintenance program or make suggestions for updating or replacement. It's money well worth spending and the efficiency savings could be substantial, especially in older buildings.
