leaking radiators

I have a 1920 vintage house with American Radiators. One of them is leaking between sections. Is there a way to take it appart and fix the leak? How are the sections held together and what is used to seal them? There are no threaded rods running from end to end.

    Threaded nipple

No threaded rod ? Then you have a steam radiator connected between sections only at the bottom ? The sections are screwed together with a threaded nipple... I would spend your money and buy new radiation. Nice ones .............check Burnham "Classic"...

    Steam or hot water?

If you've got hot water, check out Buderus, Dianorm(sp), Runtal or replacements by Burnham.

If you've got steam your choices are a bit more limited. The Burnham radiators can still be used but if you're looking for anything in the "new look" style , try steamradiators.com . They make a nice and neat looking steam product. Chris

Quite often scrap yards will save rads that aren't busted and sell them cheap, perhaps $3 to $5 a section.

You have to examine them closely, but its worth a look. One yard near me will take returns on leakers.

I picked up a huge old low boy rad with seven setions that had about 10 tubes in each section (probably a gurney) for $35.
