When did American Standard Stop making boilers

Since there web site is of no use I figured, go straight to the pro's. I still encounter these on the rare ocassion. They are typically hard to date. Any date codes hidden in the serial/model numbers? When did they stop producing boiler? Even better, why did they stop producing boilers and stick with scorched air?

    Some info

Burnham bought the boiler line in the Mid 1970's. I see quite a few in my area. I also almost never see one leaking...I just replaced a 40 year old steamer that had finally rotted through. I tested a smaller 240,000 atmospheric gas with draft hood steamer about 40 years old and it is running about 76% efficient, just as good as the new ones I test.
IMHO one of the best boilers ever built.

A-S sold their boiler line to Burnham

in 1971 or so. Burnham continued making A-S boilers under the name Burnham-America for several years after that. I believe A-S was out of the heating business for some time and recently re-entered it with their current line of scorched-air gear, none of which will keep people as comfortable as one of their older boilers.

    Ammerican Standard

In October I thought my oil, A-3 Steam boiler was finished - leaking internally, it seemed. A half bottle of stop-leak has kept things under control. But for how much longer? I am in NYCity, easter Queens and I am looking for an estimate for a future replacement.
  • Thanks

Thanks for the info. I agree, they were very well made boilers. Typically whenever I see them, they are still in great shape and doing well. Any way of determining the exact age from info on the data plates - serial/model #'s?

    I have an American Standard...

G-3 steam boiler that was , I believe, installed in the LATE 1960's and was told it was one of the last ones. Still kicking....in a brownish jacket....with 6 or 7 sections...natural gas...millivotl system. I was told a few years back that the serial number WILL tell when she was made.....

Hope yours is as good to you as mine is to me!

    I have an old

American Radiator and Sanitary Standard coal converted to gas boiler from the 1920's. That company joined to for American Standard. Until last year it was the sole unit that heated my home. Now it's a mere passageway for the hot water generated in an outdoor boiler. Pretty impressive longevity I think, however.
