I know every one has ther own ideas about this subject but I was just wanted to know the pros and cons of having a standard 3/4 ton van to having a one ton box truck or service body like the ones sparten or hakney makes? Are they worth the extra 5 to 7 thousand dollars compaired to a box van? What kid of gas milage do they get? I am thinking of getting a bigger truck I have a 3/4 ton Chevy van right now but at times I have to tow my cargo trailer for the extra space.

    My new truck is a GMC 3500 with dual wheels and a 12' untilimaster (trademaster box) I love it I keep trying to fill it up and I have tons of room. As for fuel my old truck 3500 GMC 10' box burned 10 bucks a day this one burns 15.
    The accountant said I should be able to write the purchase off this tax year? Best Wishes J.Lockard

    Sprinter

    We use the chevy 3500 vans the get anywhere from 6 to 11 miles to gallon ( we have been tracking lately) We have bee researchung the Sprinter and it appears to get between 20 to 30 mpg. It also is solid and needs oil changes only every 10,000 miles. Check it out. it is maid by Mercedes as well. in UK this is all they use

    The answer is......... It depends.

    If you're using the vehicle for service alone, a regular van or a Sprinter would do nicely for 90% of that work. The Sprinters get excellent fuel mileage and have extended maint schedules. The fact that they are built by Mercedes Benz doesn't hurt matters either.

    If you are looking for a do it all, haul it all, service it all, install it all, type of vehicle your best bet is probably on of the cube body jobs. They have loads of GVW capacity, bins and racks along with space to haul darn near anything.

    I have a Grumman Route star Step Van with a one ton Chevy chassis.This is one truck that makes it so easy to work out of. All kinds of room. I can stand up straight in the back. I don't have to kill my knees crawling over equipment.The verticle sides make the best use of space and have the room for LARGE shelves. The wheelbase is the same (although longer wheelbases are available) and because of the aluminum body, gas mileage is comparable to a standard van. After 25 years, I've had all types of trucks. I'm never going to get anything else but a step van again.

    Add another vote for the Grumman step vans. I've worked off of all kinds of work trucks and have found a step van, by far, the easiest to work off.

    3/4 ton van = car...
    1 ton truck = truck...
    Imports means you might have to wait for parts.
    Domestic means might be made in the U.S.A. close to home.
    This is not a advertisement for Ford but I am a SuperDuty man with 1 diesel at 300,000 miles and I would not trade it for all the tea in China.
    Remember this is an investment into your company and who you are.

    been using spartan type trucks for quite a few years now and wouldnt have anything else. The gas mileage is about the same as a van and we went to commercial metal book/storage shelving with plastic bins for everything inside, The shelving is fully adjustable and the bins are dividable. We turn the cross pieces upsidedown which gives a us a lip to hold the bins in place. This is very durable and can be used in truck after truck.
