drill and tap

Help!! In my 4 story building, all risers appear only thru first three floors. 4th floor has radiators, but no risers. And, these risers that seemingly terminate between the 3rd floor ceiling and 4th floor, have no air vents. Should I drill and tap air vents into all risers on 3rd floor. Will 4th floor then heat better?

You have stated what is there...

    but not the problem!

Are you having trouble getting heat to the top (4th) floor?

You imply something is wrong because the risers end at the third floor. They must enter the 4th floor radiation as the end of the piping, right? If so, the air vents radiation on the top floor radiators IS in fact the riser vent.

Risers in large structures are frequently vented by virtue of all the branch take-offs within he walls. The natural tendency for steam to go up - rather than sideways is the reason no riser vent is usual. Could you install one? Sure. Would it help, not as well as properly sized vents throughout the entire building - especially the main vents down in the horizontal steam mains.

Let us know how you make out.

    Ah, I understand now.

So, 4th floor rad vents serve as the riser vents. cool. Didn't meant to imply something was wrong, just thought that upper floor would heat faster with vents on the risers. Not that it takes too long now, but faster is always better, i guess. Then guess I won't muck around. i believe all vents are propertly sized, as I studied the Gorton chart and mades changes to what previous owner had.
