thermal vent dampers

Would any of the very bright wallies know of a supplier for a thermally activated vent damper. Application is a water heater with spark ignition. Due to some recent northern winds and - 28 deg C temps - the darn thing froze up. (more importantly - are they still legal?)

    What kind

of water heater is this? If this is vented in a vertical chimney, you really need to fix the source of the downdraft that caused the freeze up. If this is sidewall vented, I don't believe you can legally install a damper.

I don't believe the thermal dampers are made anymore.

    Bosch knock off

instanteous wall hung. Once again I'm taking advantage of the wall to let me think out loud. I have not seen these dampers in anyones catologue for years - the alternative may be expensive. This project is off grid so must find a solution that consumes little or no electricity. (trace inverter and batteries/solar) The vent is 6 inch b vent - 6 foot vertical rise - 18 inch horizontal outlet through outside wall. Meets code and manufacturers recommendations - but still freezes. The woman that lives there is a bit of a mountaineer - it's the first hot water she's had in 20 years. (never thought she needed it)But now that she's got it - doesn't want to wake up every morning and thaw the water heater.

    Big pipe

6 inch seems pretty big, is there a chance you can reduce the input enough to reduce vent size? Also, since you need house heat to keep from freeze up can you install a barometric damper? Can you put a chase arround the B vent outside to reduce heat loss? I think the C conversion is - 18F if this happens only that low can you get her to run a little hot water at night? Or how about a DC fan to blow a little house air on the freeze point or a 12 volt light bulb or other heater.

    Vent size

is per manufacturer recommendation for high altitude. Less than one foot of b vent extends past side wall exit - plus cap. Still looking for options to control draft though.

    Thanks
