Boiler Quit Firing

jim post

When I got home from work today I noticed my 37 yr old LP boiler had quit firing sometime during the day. The Pilot is still burning but when I crank a tstat for heat the boiler never fires off. It's got a Honeywell L81481 aquastat and serves 3 zones of copper fin tube baseboard and had been working well up to this point. Could someone offer some troubleshooting advice to help keep my house from turning into an igloo tonight. Thanks in advance.

    Maybe it just

Maybe it just got tired, 37 huh? I'm 48 and I am tired when I get home.

Maybe the thermo couple burned out. Maybe you could call a service technician. Did you try kicking it?

do you want to be on the bomb squad as a ROOKIE?

you need to have a little respect for your unit --the only advice i would offer a homeowner is to make sure you have gas and change the thermocouple -{if he understood exactly what i was talking about}if you have standing pilot and its on --there is nothing more you can do --turn it off and call a service man --------the problem may be a limit or the gas valve or gas regulator not Rookie serviceable areas

    no heat

coper boilers usally have flow switches to protect the boiler from running with no pump check them and the 24v system too

I can think of at least a dozen things that could cause your problem, none are eazy to diagnose remotly. I would suggest that you call someone local to have a look-see.

Have you tried to tap all the little boxes with a screw driver handle?

Is there a red button on one of the boxes? If so, push it but only once.

Does the circ. run when you turn up the t-stats?

If it does, you might try shorting the T T terminals on the 8148 and see if the burner comes on. I really don't suggest this but if you are in danger of freezing and you can't get somebody knowlegable to come out, it may be your only choice. DO NOT touch any other terminals!!!! The others may have 120 volts on them.

    the Heating gods respond

Thanks for the advice. Yes I am a lowly homeowner BUT I do respect the old basmor lp unit that heats my humble abode AND the hydronic gods that frequent this board. I have been reading up on boilers here for over a year in anticipation replacing the BasMor.

Believe it or not on the "3rd kick and 4th prayer" she fired off and seems to have decided to run.

Seriously, I took the cover off the aquastat to see if anything looked fried...nope! and then switched the little black slider on the top of the aquasat back and forth. When I started to put the aquastat cover back on the boiler fired briefly(after I cleaned out my pants :-) ) I continued putting the 8148 cover on and gave it a squeeze and the boiler fired and continued running (so far)under normal control. Good thing cause my water temp was down under 7O which wasn't doing much to heat the place. Thanks for the help.

    Sounds like

it is time to have a Professional replace that aquastat, inspect the safety devices AND give the combustion apparatus a thorough cleaning/tuneup. Your wallet will thank you... :-) and you may just get some more (efficiently running) time out of the old Geezer.
