my home has a single pipe monoflo system.one curcuit's supply is piped from begining of the main, the return(mnoflo tee)is piped into the end of the main(closest to the boiler).i have treid to attatch a diagram.was this done too prevent cold water slugging during cold startup? i will be replacing boiler in the spring, should this be repiped?

It was piped this way to run hotter water to that radiator. Perhaps that radiator was originally undersized or else the owners wanted that room a little warmer than the rest.

I see what you mean about startup slugging as if they installed a bypass to keep return water temperatures up. It's a possibility.

BTW, what room is that radiator in? Is it consistently warmer in that room?

    Bizarre...

On that strange branch, can we assume that the diverter tee is on the return? If so, then it is really taking flow away from all of the emmitters after where it branches off. I guess the big question is, does the heating system feel balanced temperature wise throughout the house?

This may have been done intentionally, but I would really try and rule out that this got piped this way because someone didn't understand diverter tee systems. If it were a bypass, why would it have two runs of baseboard in it? Why not just pipe in a bypass?

the house is small, all cast iron radiators+baseboards.the curcuit in question is in the living room.this is the only curcuit on an interior wall.the monoflo tee is in the correct position to funtion(in the return).the house heat is not noticably unbalanced.the last curcuit, our bedroom there is a noticable drop in radiator temp.this is of course the last cucuit and to be expected.i did find and repair one improperly installed tee on another curcuit some time back.i will probably change this curcuit as well if after a load calculation there is enough baseboard.my reason for asking about the possible bypass theory.just thought maybe some oldtime plumbing trick to help with condesation.
