The electrical code doesn't require GFI's for dedicated appliance circuits. Also on a boiler with electronic ignition the GFI can cause ignition problems.

    Should a boiler circuit be GFI protected since it is hooked up to an appliance containing water?

    We are not required anywhere here in Maine to install a GFI on the boiler circuit. The heating system is usually very well grounded...the boiler usually sits on the concrete floor or on cement blocks or a pad.
    Check you local authority for any possible code requirements.
